"THE
END OF THE COUNTRY THAT NEVER WAS."
A FICTITIOUS BELGIAN CIVIL WAR IN THE LATE 1930's. A civil war is a war between organized groups to take control of a nation or region, or to change government policies. It is a high-intensity conflict, often involving regular armed forces, that is sustained, organized and large-scale. Civil wars result in large numbers of casualties, suffering of the population and the expenditure of large amounts of resource. |

The
idea behind this wargames project has sprung from "1938 - A very
British Civil War" a similar fictitious setting in the same timeframe,
published by Solway Crafts & Miniatures (U.K.). We are in the mid-late
1930's and fascist dictators in Europe are on the rise. In the U.K.
Edward VIII refuses to give up the throne when marrying mrs. Simpson.
The governement resigns and the British fascist leader sir Oswald Mosley
is asked by his friend Edward VIII to form a new governement. As a result,
Britain is plunged in a civil war. A similar fictitious situation develops
in Belgium where there are rumours that the recently widowed king Leopold
III is to marry miss Lilian Baels. True or not, this rumour is the "casus
belli" several political factions have been waiting for to take
to the streets and confront each other in open battle. The king flees
to Brussels, accompanied by his children, miss Baels and her parents.
As miss Baels' father happens to be the governor of the province of
West-Flanders (situated by the English Channel), a power vacuum arises
there and Flemish nationalist elements grasp the opportunity to declare
the region of Flanders independant, with the King's brother (prince
Karel) as their head of state. Mosley and Edward VIII send an expeditionary
force to the Belgian seaports "to safeguard British trade"
and French troops are concentrating south of the Belgian border. All
political factions in Belgium form armed militias and the situation
escalates. We are on the break of civil war...
